LIFE IS A GAME OF INCHES

Last Saturday a team called Atletico Madrid won the soccer championship in Spain.

Why is this important, unless you’re Spanish and love ball sports? Because it was impossible. It shouldn’t have happened.

They had two good players, but the rest were either has-beens or blokes none of the big clubs wanted. Atletico’s total wage bill amounted to the small change that Cristiano Ronaldo drops down the back seat of his Bentley. The club president mortgaged his own house to try and keep the club afloat.

To win it, they needed to draw their last match of the season against one of Spain’s biggest teams, my old town, Barcelona. A few minutes in, two of their best players went off injured. They were losing at half time. The dream was over.

Or so everyone thought.

Their manager’s favorite movie speech is this one by Al Pacino, from Any Given Sunday. Maybe he said something like this to his own team at half time because, second half, they came out transformed and did the impossible.

I’ve been listening to this speech a lot lately. So if you’re facing big challenges in your life right now, you might like to hear it too.
