IS IT … ?
(A) A LARGE CRATE OF KRISPY KREME DOUGHNUTS LINED UP BY SOMEONE WITH SEVERE OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER
(B) THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT FOR A HEWLETT PACKARD 23Q/J-1Y DOUBLE HELIX TRANSPONDER
(C) THE WORLD’S LARGEST COLLECTION OF CHEERIOS, LAID END TO END.
(D) BARCELONA
The answer is (D). This is what my adopted home looks like from the air - and my thanks to my good friend Glenn Starkey for pointing it out.
If you answered (A) or (C) you probably need to do something about your sugar fixation, you’re starting to hallucinate. And if you answered (B) well there’s no hope for you. You clearly have not been paying attention or you’d know I have no idea what a circuit board is, never mind a double helix transponder.
If there is such a thing.
For a Barcelona inhabitant, it was easy to see it is an image of our Eixample with the Avenue Diagonal cutting in “diagonal”. An interesting view from above of Barcelona, but without the gardens planned by the developing designer Ildefons Cerdà in the middle of each “apple”
Best wishes, Lurdes
Yes, I knew you’d have no problem with it, Lurdes! I think it was a wonderful idea. And it still works, for mine. But the city would have looked quite stunning with the gardens he planned as well. Were they ever planted?
Some “apple” interiors (or whatever the name in English) are being recovered as green zones. Most probably you have seen some of them
I have my niece and her new husband staying with me at the moment (which is why I’m late replying to everyone!) They are really impressed with how Barcelona was designed. Eixample has a very distinctive look. No, I haven’t seen the green zones yet though …
Good grief! What is the population of Barcelona? Having lived in a community with a population of slightly less than 10,000 for most of my life all I can say is…wow! It looks like a HUGE city!
It is big, Kristy, I think the city without the satellite suburbs is 1.7 million. But I live just 10 minutes from the centre, in a suburb called San Antoni, and it feels more like a village. People seem to know each other and it certainly doesn’t feel like a metropolis where I am. Eixample is brilliantly laid out and a credit to the planner that Lurdes mentions here.
That’s amazing. Detroit, the largest city in Michigan, is barely over 700k. If you add in the rest of the population from the county it’s 1.8 million…and that includes everyone 34 cities.
What possessed you to choose Barcelona?
Well Christina … a few reasons … love Spain and the way of life - and the Spanish are very laid-back, friendly people. I wanted to be near London for work - and so I could see my daughters, who live and work there. Barca is only two hours away by jet - much easier than taking a British train! The climate is near as perfect as any place I have ever been. The beer is brilliant, the bars are fantastic and I wanted the challenge of living in another country and learning another language. I have an EEC passport which makes it easier - I’m British by birth. And I love cities that look like doughnuts!
My father, the irascible Scot, surname Wallace, loved Spain and Italy; we had to pry him out of Madrid…
Say no more. I do believe you’ve found your home. Very interesting. Thanks, Colin.
Being Legally Blind, or Bland, (as my friends say; I need better friends, eh, wot?) but not Blond (still a redhead after 57 years, I picked B, until I saw D, after 5 minutes of poring over the picture and then reading my choices. The photo does look suspiciously like some innards of microprocessors that are trying to deal with simultaneity functions and they no longer use circuit boards for those functions. Micro-processing has become so tiny, it can barely be seen with the naked eye. This is done to deal with one of the primary deal-breakers; heat-dispersion. Now, they just have to deal with that last deal-breaker. Can 1 thing be in 2 places at the same time? Singularity or simultaneity? I am a geek trifecta, music, math and computers. Nonetheless, an awesome picture! Thanks for the gorgeousness!
Wow - that is an amazing picture. It all looks so organized. Like someone with OCD designed the city grid.
