WHAT IS AUSTRALIA’S GREATEST EVER LOVE STORY?

Cool Gus Publishing is currently doing a double-whammy Goodreads Giveway! More at the end of this post.

But first, what is Australia’s greatest ever love story?

Have you guessed the answer yet?

While you’re thinking about it, here’s something a little more profound. I found this at Lena Corazon’s blog, a valedictory to the wonderful Audre Lord. If you’ve never read this poet’s work, just take a moment to read about a remarkable woman’s life and read her poem: A Litany for Survival. It’s beautiful.

Have you ever been searching for the right word and can’t quite find it? That’s perhaps because English doesn’t have it. We’ve all tartled, for instance, but only the Scots have a word for it. We have all probably had friends that tingo. And at the moment I am experiencing saudade.

Read this, and contemplate how difficult it is to right well in English with such a limited vocabulary.

If the English language lacks beauty and subtlety, some people only make it worse. Check out the blog of unnecessary quotes. It’s “hilarious.”

My nephew and his wife has just had a baby girl. I have sent him this. Do you think it will help?

Finally, If This Post Makes You Laugh, Then You’re A Terrible Person. Yes,you really are.

And what is Australia’s greatest ever love story? It’s between men and beer, I’m afraid. As the video below illustrates:

  1. Lena Corazon says:

Colin, thank you so much for linking to my post on Audre Lorde! I really appreciate it. :D

  2. Trish D says:

My favourite bit of this blog entry, were the foreign words with no exact English equivalent. I think I’ve known the toska, litost, torschlusspanik and L’appel du vide … but as yet I’ve never allowed myself to succumb to tingo or be tingoed, thankfully. Tingo - “the act of taking objects one desires from the house of a friend by gradually borrowing all of them.” :)

    Another enjoyable read, Colin.

    • Thanks Trish. Those words were great, weren’t they? I’ve had quite a few books tingoed - I’d rather people tingo the microwave than one of my books but (sigh) what can you do?
