READ RAGE

I had to respond regarding horrible reviews. Beethoven once received a review from some hapless gorm ( I read this in Music School and cannot remember the gorm’s name, but we all had quite a howl over this) who compared the 1st movement of Beethoven’s 7th Symphony in A Major to “badly-oiled syringes”. I’m pretty sure said gorm had other hideous things to say, but I cannot quite remember what they were. Nor can I remember Ludwig’s reaction. He probably told the man that he was a bad person and made horrible soup, as was his wont; Beethoven’s letters were a delight and one of the reasons I never got higher than a “B” in Music History in the Early Romantic period. Damn him!
I don’t think Beethoven would have worried too much, Mary. John Lennon reckoned he just rolled over.
