Winter is coming. Here’s something to avoid on a cold morning:

You should get out the tissues for this next bit of footage. Yan Yuhong is ten years old and an enthusiastic student. His problem is that a fever he suffered as an infant has left him paralyzed from the waist down.
So he walks to school on his hands.
It takes him about an hour and a half. If you can watch this without at least a manly clearing of the throat, you’re made of ice.

Yan is not discouraged by not being able to use his legs. Many writers rush for the tissue box after one bad review. Here’s a great post at Joanna Penn’s blog about how to handle the rejection and criticism that is part of every writer’s day.
“Brad and Janet gave each other a long Mamihlapinatapei. Surely this was yuanfen? He had a forelsket every time he looked at her. Finally he gave her a cafune.”

I’m due to go back to my dentist for another check up soon. Lucky for me, I don’t live in the Wild West - or the Middle Ages. I could walk out with a broken jaw. Here’s why! From Unusual Historicals.
I LOVE LYDIA CALLIS!!!
She is NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg’s sign language interpreter at his press conferences. Take a look at this and you’ll love her too. Fantastic! Still can’t tell you what Bloomberg looks like though.
Ever wanted to tell that overbearing employer where he can stick his job and go out and follow your dream? So did Bram Stoker - so after 20 years of tyranny he wrote Dracula, basing his legendary character on his old boss. Inspirational post from Debra Eve.
Finally here’s a lady, fed up with her job and the weather, who knows PRECISELY what she wants. I play this one over and over, it still cracks me up.

Thanks for the shout out, Colin! Such a big fan of Stoker. I’ve had so many narcissistic bosses, but to write something like Dracula? Just astonishing. And that story of Yan…the resilience of the human spirit humbles me.
The Chinese boy really makes me feel humble. I think about how many times I tried to get out of school, especially when there was no football practice/game that day. It’s hard to even begin to imagine the courage it takes.
So many people think they’ve got it tough. We need to look at people like Yan to show us that we’re more fortunate than we think we are. I know it doesn’t make our problems any less difficult, but when we see what other people have to deal with, it helps keep things in perspective.
LOVE that first video. It’s been a favorite for a long time. But now the lady with no more secrets is going to be a favorite, too. How funny! But I agree with her 100%. That would be a perfect life.
The lady with no more secrets is my favourite too. No fumbling or stuttering in front of the camera. A lady who had made up her mind about what she wants!
You titled this one wonderfully, Colin - I laughed, I cried, I cringed. I remember the car in the snow from last year, but hadn’t seen the others. Yan is incredible and I LOVE the 10 relationship words. And I watched the last one twice, still laughing (and wishing). Thanks!
Thanks Jennifer. Did I put the one in the snow up last year? I forgot. I needed an intro for that brilliant laid well and often lady!
ROTFL! This is awesome, Colin, You always have the best sctuff.
Thanks Amy. I always love the mashes - I have some sources and I never know what’s going to show up either!
